Governor Washburn Bed B-54

sold to Tami B., Vermont

Antique four poster bed from Vermont

This impressive Empire style bed from Vermont demonstrates the skill of the rural craftsman in early 19th century America. The bed was built c. 1825-1835 and is unusually complete with the original casters, large forged bed bolts and the original wrench. The massive vase and ring turned posts are of flame birch 5" square, the rails birch and head and footboard pine. The scrolled head and footboard add a touch of whimsey with their unusual design. The bed originally had a rope spring and later notches for slats were added. All the parts display marks from the craftsman's hand tools. The finish is old or original. The headboard and footboard were varnished over the old finish. The rails are unfinished. This bed is truly a unique piece with a bit of history.Photo of Peter Washburn

The bed reportedly belonged to Peter Washburn (1814-1870) of Woodstock, Vermont who graduated from Dartmouth in 1835. He was elected Reporter of Decisions for the Vermont Supreme Court in 1844 and later was elected to the state legislature. He led the Vermont delegation to the 1860 Republican National Convention that nominated Abraham Lincoln and then served as Brigadier General with the 1st Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. He was elected governor in 1869. He died in office in 1870.

Additional photos are below showing the original finish color, the hardware, net canopy that came with the bed and other details.

Due to the completeness and rarity of this bed I will only make longer side rails so it will accommodate a queen mattress. The original side rails will be included.
